The Edwards School of Business believes in a well-rounded education and our co-op/internship opportunities provide real-life experiential work experiences to enhance classroom instruction. Choose from two programs, the Edwards Co-operative Education Program for third-year undergraduate students and the Edwards MBA Internship Program for first-year MBA students with little to no relevant experience.

Hiring an undergraduate or MBA student is great for:

• Evaluating future talent in a cost-effective way without having to make permanent hiring commitments
• Employing additional staff for short-term leaves, peak periods and/or projects
• Injecting creativity, new perspectives and enthusiasm into your organization

Recruit from August through December. Undergraduate and MBA students are available each January for 8 to 12 months.

We have students available from six areas of undergraduate study including Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing, Human Resources, and Supply Chain Management; and our MBA Program.

How to get started

Consider the following:

• Determine if there is a temporary need or an opportunity for a student to fulfill daily or ad hoc duties 
• Develop a description of the specific type of work or project they could complete and the skills and qualifications required
• Consider the salary you can offer. The average salary ranges from $20-$27/hour
• Determine the length of the work term. Students are available every January for 8 months or 12 months
• Coordinate with your staff, supervision and possible mentoring roles that will be required
• August through December is the ideal time to recruit for a January start

• Mark your calendar to attend the Edwards Networking Open House in early September to meet the highest selection of potential candidates
• You decide whether to interview or not based upon the applications received
• If/when you are ready to make an offer, contact Edwards Career Services
• Prepare for the student's start date in January

Working with Edwards Career Services

• Edwards Career Services ensures co-op/intern student meets admission requirements showcasing their communication, interpersonal and academic skills, and more importantly, a sincere interest in succeeding
• All students participate in professional development workshops to prepare them for their work terms
• Edwards Career Services monitors students to ensure a successful and productive experience for both the employer and the student
• All students are required to write academic papers and a consulting report at the end of their final work term

Employer responsibility

• Set learning objectives and provide a meaningful experience
• Supervise and mentor the co-op/intern student to maximize their personal development
• Communicate and evaluate their experience
• Welcome a site visit by Edwards Career Services in the first two months of each work term

Funding Opportunities

• Edwards School of Business in partnership with Federated Co-operatives Limited
  In partnership with Federated Co-operatives Limited, we are able to provide funding support for Indigenous businesses hiring Edwards co-op students and businesses hiring Edwards Indigenous students. For more information on how you can access these funding opportunities, contact our office.
• Government of Canada
  Through the Student Work Placement program, employers can apply for wage subsidies to help them hire post-secondary students across Canada. 
• BioTalent Canada
  BioTalent Canada has a long track record of successful wage-subsidy programs, helping new talent gain the skills needed for employment in biotech while assisting companies in offsetting the costs associated with hiring. Biotechnology or healthcare organizations can hire students from any post-secondary institutions across Canada through BioTalent Canada’s Student Work Placement Program.
• Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace (CCAA)
  The Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) will support partnerships between employers and post-secondary education (PSE) institutions to create more work- integrated learning placements for students enrolled in post-secondary studies across Canada. The Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace (CCAA) is one of the partners that will deliver the program, working with employers and PSE institutions in the Aviation and Aerospace sector. Under SWPP, employers offering quality work-integrated learning placements to PSE students will be eligible to receive wage subsidies through CCAA.
• Electricity Human Resources Canada (EHRC) Empowering Futures Program

  Electricity Human Resources Canada’s (EHRC) Empowering Futures Program is Canada’s student work placement initiative for the electricity industry, providing financial incentives of up to $7,000 to employers who create new Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities.

• Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Employment Programs
  Training & Wage Subsidies for Environmental Jobs As the steward for the Canadian Environmental workforce across all industries, we offer employment programs that stimulate environmental career pathways, skill development, business growth, workforce support and workforce advancement through wage and training funding.
• Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium (EMC) WILWorks
  Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium (EMC), via its WILWorks program, is a preferred partner for the Government of Canada to deliver the Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) to Canada's manufacturing and related sectors.
• Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) WIL Digital
  ICTC’s WIL Digital is an innovative Work Integrated Learning program that helps employers grow their businesses by providing financial assistance for hiring post-secondary students.
• Magnet Student Work Placement Program
  The Magnet Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) brings together employers, students, and post-secondary school stakeholders to create quality work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities.
• Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MIHR) Gearing Up
  Gearing Up is the student work placement program for Canada’s mining sector. Led by MIHR, Gearing Up is creating over 1250 new WIL opportunities in mining. Wage subsidies up to $7,000 are available to employers who create new co‑ops, internships, field placements, applied projects, capstone projects or case competitions.
• Mitacs BSI
  Applications are now open for the Mitacs Business Strategy Internship (BSI) program, an exciting opportunity to leverage $5,000 + GST into a $10,000 student internship, through the support of Mitacs.
• Technation.ca Career Ready Program
  Students are an ideal source of people-power for short-term projects. Employing work term students is an effective recruiting tool, and supports the development of skills in the next generation of Canada’s workforce. An eligible employer must be willing to employ a student in a tech-immersive role. Tech and non-tech focused organizations are encouraged to apply.
• Venture for Canada
  Venture for Canada partners with Canadian startups, SMEs, and innovative businesses to expose the next generation of Canadian Entrepreneurs to the real-world experience they need to thrive.
