My name is Courtney Morrison, and I am the Finance and Administration Manager for the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.

Financial management is about having the confidence to know that you’re performing your role well and advising to the best of your ability. It involves thorough due diligence and upholding your fiduciary duty.

A good financial manager is analytical, detailed, and has the confidence to make the best decision and advise other people.
Tell me about your experience at the Edwards School of Business.
My experience at the Edwards School of Business was highly rewarding. I was able to complete my program while working full-time and raising a young family. The faculty and staff were incredibly supportive, and I formed several lifelong friendships. The staff at Edwards are dedicated to your success, even if you’re managing a busy career or personal life. Without the financial skills I gained there, I wouldn’t be in my current role. What was once a challenge for me quickly became one of my strengths, and now I feel at ease with financial data.
How has this program helped you in your current role?
As a Finance and Administration Manager, I frequently work with numbers and budgets. It's crucial for me to understand what these numbers are telling me and what they reveal about the organization’s health and status. The program has given me the skills I previously lacked, allowing me to confidently interpret financial data and assess the overall health of the organization.
What skills did you take from your program?
This program taught me how to interpret financial data and recognize the story it tells. I did not have this confidence in my previous financial management role, so I sought out the Edwards School of Business to give me that knowledge and confidence in this area. After completing this program, I had the confidence, and the skill set to go after roles that better aligned with my experience.
Why are financial management skills important to know?
Financial management skills are essential because, even if you have an accountant, it’s vital to understand what they’re telling you. Knowing how to interpret financial information allows you to assess the organization’s health and ensure you’re meeting your due diligence responsibilities. The skills I learned have also made me a more effective board member for various organizations, including chairing an audit committee. This program has boosted my confidence both professionally and personally, enabling me to contribute meaningfully to volunteer roles and support organizations my children are involved in.
What would you say to someone considering this program?
For anyone considering the Graduate Certificate in Financial Management program I would encourage them to explore it. At Edwards, you can expect a challenging yet fulfilling program with lots of support from faculty and staff.
