Program Overview

Develop your skills in dealing with financial information.

Transform business professionals with little or no experience in accounting or financial management to develop a working knowledge of these critical business areas. This program builds confidence in reading and understanding financial information to aid in financial decisions by providing clear examples of the content, concepts and terminology of financial systems. Learn methods often used to evaluate the financial viability and impact of business decisions.

  • Key Learning Objectives

    Accounting Sessions:

    • Understand Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and the accounting process.
    • Understand and learn to analyze balance sheets, income statements, statements of cash flows, audit reports, and other reports accompanying financial statements.
    • Learn general accounting practices for not-for-profit organizations.
    • Learn the difference between financial accounting and managerial accounting.
    • Understand cost-volume profit analysis including relevant, variable, and fixed costs.
    • Calculate break-even points and contribution margins to assist with business decision making.

     

    Finance Sessions:

    • Learn to analyze corporate financial statements from a finance perspective.
    • Understand discounted cash flow analysis and its relevance in stock and bond valuation.
    • Analyze the viability of corporate projects.
    • Understand the lessons learned from capital market history and how risk and return are vital in the analysis of capital requirements.
    • Learn how to analyze lease vs. purchase decisions.
  • Who Should Attend

    Business managers with little or no experience in financial reporting and corporate finance who:

    • use financial and accounting information in their decision-making processes;
    • are interested in gaining a working knowledge of key finance topics;
    • wish to gain a better fundamental understanding of financial systems; and
    • wishes to improve their professional effectiveness and career mobility.

     

    No previous accounting or financial background is required to benefit from this course, however, a basic knowledge would be useful.

In-person delivery occurs at Edwards Executive Education, #600 340 3rd Ave N, Saskatoon, with all learning materials provided digitally on Canvas. In-person delivery includes instructor facilitation, small group exercises, large group discussions, interactive learning, networking and ample breaks and opportunities for questions and discussions. Participants will be required to bring a laptop/digital device to access all learning materials during the program. Breakfast, lunch, and refreshments will be provided.

Instructor Profile

Brandy Mackintosh 

Brandy Mackintosh is an Associate Professor at the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan, where she teaches financial accounting and external auditing. She has won numerous teaching awards at the College and University level, including the University of Saskatchewan Provost College Teaching Excellence Award.  Brandy is an author of an introductory financial accounting textbook used by institutions across Canada, and has published award winning cases in accounting journals. Brandy holds an undergraduate accounting degree, and is a CPA, CA (Canada). Prior to joining the Edwards School of Business, she worked as an audit manager at Deloitte serving owner-managed businesses.

Brian Lane

Brian Lane is a finance faculty member at the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan, teaching corporate and personal finance and coaching finance student competition teams. Prior to the university Brian worked in industry in operations, managerial, and finance roles. He has Commerce and MBA degrees from the U of S and holds Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designations. Outside of the university, Brian serves as a trustee for institutional investment funds and provides consulting services as an expert witness for investment litigations.

Scott Sinclair

Scott is a lecturer at the Sauder School of Business. He has been actively involved in professional accounting education for more than 30 years. He was the principal author for the CA School of Business in Western Canada between 2000 and 2010, and has won multiple awards for teaching excellence. He has also worked for Coopers & Lybrand Chartered Accounts, serving small business and mining clients.
